Pat Robertson told a "700 Club" viewer that homosexuality is " a delicate situation" and suggested she pray for her 30-year-old nephew who just came out as gay, Right Wing Watch first reported.
Robertson, whose eyebrow-raising claims about the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community are essentially a trademark of his "700 Club" broadcasts, told the woman that her nephew may have been abused in the past. Still, he suggested she make her nephew realize how "explicit" the Bible is in its condemnation of homosexuality.
“A few years ago psychiatrists and psychologists used to say that homosexuality was a mental illness, now the Supreme Court has said that it is a protected right,” Robertson said. “So what’s he going to pray about? Is he going to say something is wrong and he’s unhappy? And if he’s unhappy and realizes he is doing something that makes him miserable, you might help him.”
Of course, Robertson's claims should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with the 83-year-old televangelist's history. In recent months, Robertson -- who infamously snagged the title of "Bigot of the Year" at the Stonewall Awards in November -- claimed that LGBT nondiscrimination ordinances will put Christians in jail, and stated that gays are just straight people who have "forsaken God."
Then, of course, he suggested Facebook create a "vomit" button so he could express his feelings surrounding LGBT-related posts.
