For many people, Starbucks is synonymous with coffee. As the world's leading coffee retailer, this global giant has more than 19,000 stores in 62 countries and serves more than 40 million customers a week. At the helm of Starbucks' success is CEO Howard Schultz, the man who grew the company from six small stores in the 1980s to the recognizable brand it is today. But for Schultz, coffee isn't just a business -- it's an art and a passion.
Schultz spoke about his journey as Starbucks' leader with Oprah on an episode of "Super Soul Sunday," revealing how certain principles have guided his business decisions. One of those principles, as Schultz mentions in his book, Onward, is not to be threatened by people smarter than you.
"You can't build any kind of organization if you're not going to surround yourself with people who have experience and skill base beyond your own -- only as if those people have like-minded values," Schultz tells Oprah in the video above. "That's the key."
If you discover people who don't share your values, Schultz suggests parting ways. "Not everyone deserves to be on the team," he says.
Oprah adds, "Compromise anything but your core values. That's what you say."
In the video, Schultz also shares his thoughts on long-term versus short-term strategies, revealing Starbucks' approach and why it is "hard to do."
