A church in Nevada County, Calif., has been ordered by local officials to remove a sign that says, "Support Our Troops," or face a fine.
According to the local government, the Simple Truth Church did not obtain the necessary paperwork to legally display the sign, which stands approximately 20 feet tall. Though the current billboard was built to replace an older one that had become rundown, Nevada County regulations require approval from its planning department before such changes can be made.
Some members of the Simple Truth Church were taken aback by the threat of a fine, including Julia Stokes, a church board member.
“It’s a little surprising,” said Stokes in an interview with KMAX-TV. “All we meant to do was beautify the corner, the area -- and it’s a reminder for me, for everyone, when you drive by, to pray for the troops.”
