Have you ever had the uncanny sensation that you're walking aimlessly without balance or direction, almost as if you're a child learning to wobble for the first time? This strangely delightful experience of foolishness is the subject of photographer Patrice Letarnec's series "Walking Upside Down."

Using the city of Paris as his backdrop, the French photographer captures an assortment of people traveling to and fro, only using their hands to do so. The resulting figures look like something between a gymnast, mutant and oompa loompa, rendering a surreal world only slightly different from our own.

"The main idea was to illustrate the French expression 'marcher sur la tête' -- to act foolishly, to go against common sense, which is more or less what we experience in today's world," Letarnec explained in an email to The Huffington Post. Whether you see the following photos as a journey through a surreal alternate universe in which our foolishness takes physical form, or a simple exercise in the possibilities of the human body, you'll surely get a kick out of these strangers going head over heels.
