Alfonso Cuaron Wins Best Director At 2014 Golden Globe Awards

Alfonso Cuaron was named Best Director at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards.

Cuaron, who directed the space epic "Gravity," defeated Steve McQueen, Paul Greengrass, Alexander Payne and David O. Russell for the honor.

It's expected that Cuaron will earn a Best Director nomination from the Academy Awards on Jan. 16 (Cuaron has received three Oscar nominations in his career, but never for directing). He was one of five filmmakers to receive a nod from the Directors Guild Awards, which is considered a strong precursor for the Oscars' award for Best Director.

This was Cuaron's first nomination at the Golden Globes. "Gravity" was also nominated in three other Globes categories: Best Picture - Drama, Best Actress - Drama (Sandra Bullock) and Best Score (Steven Price).

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted the 71st annual Golden Globes, which were held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. Last year, Ben Affleck won Best Director at the Golden Globes. Affleck was not nominated in the category at the Academy Awards, where the Best Director trophy went to Ang Lee for "Life of Pi."
