Florida Gov. Rick Scott Picks First Latino Lt. Gov.

MIAMI — Hoping to bolster his support in South Florida's Hispanic community, Gov. Rick Scott chose Miami-Dade official Carlos Lopez-Cantera on Tuesday as lieutenant governor and his running mate in November.

He will be the first Hispanic to hold the office.

An influential former state legislator, Lopez-Cantera, 40, rose steadily in the Florida House as an ally of then-Speaker Marco Rubio and was House majority leader from 2010 to 2012.
