Rupert Grint Talks About Shia LaBeouf Dropping Acid

'Harry Potter' Star Talks About That Time Shia LaBeouf Dropped Acid

Working with Shia LaBeouf was apparently a very eye-opening experience for "Harry Potter" star Rupert Grint, especially that time he saw LaBeouf drop acid.

Grint and LaBeouf co-starred in "Charlie Countryman," an action/comedy about a man named Charlie Countryman (LaBeouf) who travels to Romania after the death of his mother, falls in love with a girl and gets tangled in the web of the Bucharest underground, dabbling in drugs and running from gangsters. Grint played an aspiring porn star named Karl.

While filming, LaBeouf took acid to fully immerse himself in the role.

"He smashed the place up, got naked and kept seeing this owl. If anything will make you not do drugs, it's watching that," Grint told the Guardian about LaBeouf's acid trip.

Apparently, the 27-year-old actor didn't even need to go through all that, because the script actually called for ecstasy.

"In the script, it's Carpathian ecstasy, a special hostel ecstasy that exists in maybe just Bucharest," director Fredrik Bond told Vulture in November. "So, Shia said he took acid? I didn't know he went out and said that. But it was always ecstasy in the script."

Bond didn't know about LaBeouf's experimental plans, but he did know the actor wanted to "go out on a limb and push the envelope."

The "Transformers" star talked about his interest in method acting back in 2012 during an interview with USA Today.

"There's a way to do an acid trip like 'Harold & Kumar,' and there's a way to be on acid," he said. "What I know of acting, Sean Penn actually strapped up to that (electric) chair in 'Dead Man Walking.' These are the guys that I look up to."

"Charlie Countryman" hit theaters in the U.S. in November. It is set to premiere in the U.K. Feb. 14.
