Hario: The Only Milk Frother You Will Ever Need (VIDEO)

It requires no power and takes up only as much space as a baby bottle. Game changer.

My husband is very good at buying thoughtful gifts. I say that not to make you seethe with jealousy (but, I mean, GO AHEAD, HE'S MINE), but to give what I'm about to tell you some extra gravitas: this Christmas, he chose one of the best, most useful and most unexpected presents of all time.

I have what some people might refer to as a café au lait problem. I'm a junkie. While I hold onto iced coffee season like a toddler holds onto a security blanket, once I finally relent and switch to the hot stuff, I will choose a café au lait whenever it's available. We have mutually agreed as two grown adults who live in an apartment the size of most people's kitchens that owning a full-fledged espresso machine is out of the question, which is why I casually mentioned that I might investigate a counter-top milk frother for café au laits at home. And then, Christmas morning, the Hario Latte Shaker came into our lives.

This thing is amazing for a variety of reasons: 1) it requires no batteries or electricity, 2) it takes up the same amount of space as a baby bottle and 3) it actually works. By pouring ice-cold milk into the bottom half, screwing on the fine mesh disc that separates the two halves and sealing the top half, you basically create a water-tight, milk-foaming cocktail shaker. You can then add the cold, foamed milk, or pour it into a microwave-safe container to heat/steam it for 20 seconds for a hot café au lait. It's also dishwasher safe. (If this makes no sense to you, check out the video above. Don't let the Japanese panic you, this video was recorded in the international language of love: coffee.)

It is great, he is great, our coffee is great. If you love café au laits and want to make them at home (great life choice, by the way, let's high five), you can pick up a Hario Latte Shaker on Amazon.
