My husband is very good at buying thoughtful gifts. I say that not to make you seethe with jealousy (but, I mean, GO AHEAD, HE'S MINE), but to give what I'm about to tell you some extra gravitas: this Christmas, he chose one of the best, most useful and most unexpected presents of all time.
I have what some people might refer to as a café au lait problem. I'm a junkie. While I hold onto iced coffee season like a toddler holds onto a security blanket, once I finally relent and switch to the hot stuff, I will choose a café au lait whenever it's available. We have mutually agreed as two grown adults who live in an apartment the size of most people's kitchens that owning a full-fledged espresso machine is out of the question, which is why I casually mentioned that I might investigate a counter-top milk frother for café au laits at home. And then, Christmas morning, the Hario Latte Shaker came into our lives.
This thing is amazing for a variety of reasons: 1) it requires no batteries or electricity, 2) it takes up the same amount of space as a baby bottle and 3) it actually works. By pouring ice-cold milk into the bottom half, screwing on the fine mesh disc that separates the two halves and sealing the top half, you basically create a water-tight, milk-foaming cocktail shaker. You can then add the cold, foamed milk, or pour it into a microwave-safe container to heat/steam it for 20 seconds for a hot café au lait. It's also dishwasher safe.
