Justin Vivian Bond Sounds Off On Mainstream Views Of The Transgender Community

Transgender performer and queer icon Justin Vivian Bond sounded off on Laverne Cox and Carmen Carrera's controversial interview with Katie Couric earlier this month, agreeing with Cox's assessment that the mainstream community emphasizes the specifics of gender transitions over lived experiences.

"People are very curious about other people's bodies and they're probably freaked out about their own," Bond said in a HuffPost Live interview this week. "I think Laverne is such a brilliant spokesperson and I'm so thrilled that she's out there saying the things that she says."

Bond, who is currently appearing in Classic Stage Company's production of "A Man's a Man" in New York and recently performed alongside Carol Channing, went on to note, "I don't even believe in the gender binary system at all. So my body is what it is; it's got a little bit of everything. Whoever I make love to or my doctor, they need to know about my body."
