Quentin Tarantino Files Lawsuit Against Gawker After Script Leak

Quentin Tarantino's anger about the script leak for what was supposed to be his next film, "The Hateful Eight," will now extend to the courtroom. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tarantino has filed a lawsuit against Gawker Media for publishing a copy of Tarantino's screenplay.

Last week, the Gawker site Defamer posted a story titled "Here Is the Leaked Quentin Tarantino 'Hateful Eight' Script," with a link to download Tarantino's 146-page first draft. THR posted a section of the Tarantino lawsuit on its website:

"Their headline boasts... 'Here,' not someplace else, but 'Here' on the Gawker website. The article then contains multiple direct links for downloading the entire Screenplay through a conveniently anonymous URL by simply clicking button-links on the Gawker page, and brazenly encourages Gawker visitors to read the Screenplay illegally with the invitation to 'Enjoy!' it."

Tarantino, of course, was upset before the Gawker post. As Deadline.com reported on Jan. 21, Tarantino put the brakes on "The Hateful Eight" after the script was pass around in Hollywood circles without his permission. "I'm very, very depressed," Tarantino told Deadline.com's Mike Fleming in an interview. "I finished a script, a first draft, and I didn't mean to shoot it until next winter, a year from now. I gave it to six people, and apparently it's gotten out today."

Tarantino revealed to Fleming that three actors had gotten the script -- Bruce Dern, Michael Madsen and Tim Roth -- and that the initial breach had potentially come from Creative Artists Agency, the company that represents Dern. CAA denied it had any hand in the breach. (Tarantino, meanwhile, said he would work with Dern again, regardless of what happened.) According to the director, he'll publish "The Hateful Eight" as a novel and work on another screenplay in the interim.
