Jed Udall, the son of Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.), was arrested Wednesday on charges of vehicular trespassing and possession of a controlled substance in Eldorado Springs, Colo., the Daily Camera and KDVR report.

According to the Daily Camera, 26-year-old Udall broke into three separate cars in a Bolder County neighborhood. Upon his arrest, police found heroin in his pocket.

"Maggie and I are deeply distressed to learn of our son's arrest," the senator said in a statement. "We love our son and stand with him in his commitment to getting the treatment he needs. We appreciate the private space to deal with this as a family."

Udall, who was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2008, is up for reelection this fall.

A number of Republicans are currently running to unseat Udall. Among them are Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck, who lost his 2010 Senate bid against Democrat Michael Bennet. Other Republicans vying for the nomination include state Rep. Amy Stepehens and state Sens. Owen Hill and Randy Baumgardner.

As of the end of 2013, Udall had raised $4.7 million toward his reelection bid.
