Philip Seymour Hoffman's Autopsy Scheduled (UPDATE)

The New York Medical Examiner's office will conduct an autopsy on Philip Seymour Hoffman Monday (Feb. 3), CNN reports. As additional information is gathered, police are determining what Hoffman did in the days leading up to his death.

The 46-year-old was found dead in his West Village apartment at approximately 11:30 a.m. Sunday (Feb. 2) of an apparent heroin overdose. According to the New York Daily News, Hoffman was discovered with a syringe in his arm and reportedly nearly 50 bags of heroin were found throughout his home.

Initially, police reported finding eight heroin envelopes, with six empty and two full. Allegedly, the bags were marked with Ace of Spades and Ace of Hearts logos. According to the New York post, these markings will be used as a starting point in a citywide hunt for Hoffman's drug dealer.

One witness told police that he saw Hoffman withdrawing a large sum of cash from an ATM near his home, before giving the money to two men, presumably in exchange for drugs. Law enforcement believes this is the last time Hoffman was seen alive.

Hoffman had struggled with substance abuse in the past. The Academy Award-winning actor spent 10 days in a detox facility last May, but had also previously opened up about addiction issues, which began in his early 20s.

"It was all that [drugs and alcohol], yeah, it was anything I could get my hands on ... I liked it all," he told CBS' "60 Minutes" in a 2006 interview. "I went [to rehab], I got sober when I was 22 years old. You get panicked ... and I got panicked for my life. It really was just that."

UPDATE: A law enforcement official says tests have confirmed that there was heroin in at least some of the dozens of plastic packets in a New York City apartment where Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead. Officials are working to determine whether the drug was mixed or tainted with anything else.
