Aimee Garcia Breaks Latina Stereotypes With Role In 'RoboCop'

LOS ANGELES – Aimee Garcia has broken free of Hollywood’s stereotypes of Hispanics with her portrayal of a scientist in “RoboCop,” saying she won the role through sheer determination even though it was initially intended for an Asian actress.

“The role was not for a Latina initially,” Garcia told Efe in an interview. “But I fought hard. I wanted to work with (Brazilian director) Jose Padilha because I love the ‘Elite Squad’ films. And the cast was amazing. So I did a lot of auditions. Why couldn’t a Latina be a scientist?”
