Mother Of 3 Killed In Alexandria, Va., Double Shooting

A music teacher and church organist was killed in a double shooting yesterday in Alexandria, Va.

Ruthanne Lodato, 59, succumbed to injuries sustained after a suspect knocked at her door, then opened fire on her and her elderly mother's caretaker. Police have not released a motive in the shooting, and neighbors in the quiet community remain shocked.

"This street probably has not had a violent crime in the history of its existence, because I grew up right on the corner here," neighbor Robert Beck told WJLA.

Despite an extensive manhunt, the suspect is not yet in custody. He is described as an older white male, balding with gray hair and a full beard, according to Alexandria police. The investigation remained active early Friday morning.

Lodato, who lived with her husband and her elderly mother, was a beloved music teacher with deep roots in Alexandria, according to WJLA. Lodato was director at Music Together Alexandria, teaching out of Del Ray United Methodist Church. She also taught music in local schools beginning in 1976.
