Openly bisexual Dutch speedskater Ireen Wust says she got a surprise congratulatory gesture from none other than Russian President Vladimir Putin after her Olympic victory in Sochi.
"He congratulated me and asked if everything was OK in Russia and I congratulated him on (Russian speedskater) Olga Graf, of course, for her third place (in the 3,000 meters)," she is quoted by ABC News and a number of other media outlets as saying. "He was happy to see me, but then he had to leave again. But I cuddled him."
GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis and HuffPost Gay Voices Executive Editor Noah Michelson sounded off on Wust's statement in an appearance on HuffPost Live this week.
CORRECTION: The original version of this article referred to Wuss as being openly gay. She identifies as bisexual and is currently in a relationship with a man, Slate reported.
