Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) called controversial claims about New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) over lane closures on the George Washington Bridge "unsettling" in an interview with KTRK-TV.
Paul wouldn't weigh in on whether Christie should remain chair of the Republican Governor's Association, but the Kentucky senator noted "it's important that people think that their government not be used to bully them."
"Nobody wants to think their government would shut down a bridge or do something just because you're a Democrat and I'm a Republican," Paul said. "It's an unsettling charge. I don't know if it's true, but it's unsettling."
This isn't the first time Paul has questioned Christie. In November 2013, Paul criticized the governor's conservatism.
But Paul's not the only one to express concern over the bridge controversy. The Newark Star-Ledger, New Jersey's most highly-circulated newspaper, said it regrets endorsing Christie in the last gubernatorial race.
Christie has dealt with major public criticism amid the scandal. He was booed by a crowd of people as he took the stage at a Super Bowl handoff ceremony in Times Square, New York in early February.
