Philip Seymour Hoffman's Diaries Detail Personal 'Demons' And Attempts To Get Sober

Posted: Updated:

Diaries written by Philip Seymour Hoffman were discovered by police as part of their investigation into the Oscar-winning actor's death, and reveal insight into the actor's addiction and final days.

Multiple sources told NBC News, that the hand-written entries make reference to various drug deals, as well as the actor's struggle with personal “demons,” and his attempts to get sober by attending Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

Sources say many of the entries are difficult to read if not completely illegible, and that it appears as though Hoffman may have written some of the entries while he was high. Another source said it seems he wrote at least part of it during his 10-day stint in rehab in 2013, and "definitely contained some soul-searching. But there is also a fair amount of rambling that doesn’t make sense."

The late actor was also allegedly in the middle of a "love triangle," according to Page Six, who claimed Hoffman wrote he was “caught in between” his relationship with longtime girlfriend Mimi O’Donnell and a woman he'd recently met. Sources told Page Six, that Hoffman's relationship with this new woman was one of the reasons O'Donnell and the couple's three young children moved out of their shared Jane Street apartment three months ago.

Hoffman, who got sober at age 22 and apparently relapsed in 2013, felt “ashamed that he was going out and hanging out and drinking” again, sources revealed to Page Six.

The 46-year-old actor was found dead in his apartment on Feb. 2, where police found more than 49 full bags of heroin, 23 empty bags, as well as various prescription drugs, NBC News previously reported.
