Transgender activist and writer Janet Mock stopped by "The Colbert Report" last night to discuss issues affecting the transgender community, her new book Redefining Realness and her high-profile interview and subsequent feud with Piers Morgan.
In true Colbert fashion, the host threw Mock some hard-hitting questions about gender pronoun usage and navigated a tricky zone that overlapped comedy and sensitive transgender issues. Mock used the opportunity to bring visibility to institutionalized problems affecting the transgender community.
"The book's purpose is to elevate the issues facing young trans women... trans people deal with daily access issues like being able to safely leave their home, being able to walk on the street without being harassed or called out of their names, being able to get affordable medical care -- which I know you really believe in! [laughs]"
Earlier this month, Mock appeared on CNN for an interview with Piers Morgan surrounding the release of her book Redefining Realness. When the interview aired, Mock took to Twitter to criticize Morgan for his packaging of the interview and use of the phrase "was a boy until 18." After the controversy erupted on Twitter, Morgan invited Mock back on his program in order to discuss where Mock felt the CNN host went wrong and the appropriate ways to talk about transgender bodies and experiences.
Colbert, of course, effectively took a serious and sensitive topic and hilariously subverted it:
