Louisiana's former Gov. Edwin Edwards (D) is considering launching a campaign for the state's Sixth Congressional district, he told Bloomberg Wednesday.
The seat is being vacated by Rep. Bill Cassidy (R), who is challenging Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu in this year's Louisiana Senate race.
Edwards, who is 86, spent eight years in prison for racketeering. He served four terms as Louisiana's governor, last besting former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke in 1991.
"I'm just figuring out all the legalities and how to set up a super PAC, and then I'm going," Edwards told Bloomberg. He added that he's the Democratic Party's "only hope" in the district.
However, his wife Trina told the Times-Picayune that he hasn’t made an official decision.
"I was there when he was on that call and he did not say that [he had decided to run]," she clarified. "He only said he was considering running...He had definitely said he had not decided."
Edwards confirmed to The Advocate that he has not made a final decision on jumping into the race.
The former governor has made numerous bold statements about his womanizing. Mother Jones compiled a list Thursday, which includes a gem on his need (or lack thereof) for Viagra.
"I don't need Viagra…Viagra needs me," Edwards told Grantland in 2012. "Doesn't the Times-Picayune know they use my blood to make that stuff?"
He delivered another infamous line the night before he was elected to his third term as governor in 1983.
“The only way I can lose this election is if I’m caught in bed with either a dead girl or a live boy," Edwards said.
Edwards and Trina, who is his third wife, starred in an A&E reality show, "The Governor's Wife," in 2013. It was canceled after drawing disappointing ratings.
