15 Reasons Why It's Great To Be Older And Single

Not too long ago, to be over fifty years old and single may have elicited sympathy from others. But today, more and more people are older and uncoupled. According to Judsen Culbreth, author of "The Boomers’ Guide to Online Dating," 16 million boomers are over fifty and single. That's over 25 percent of men and women in that age group. What's more, most of these older women report being happier staying single than getting married (or remarried).

We're inclined to agree with those ladies. Being single at this age opens up a whole new world of happiness and excitement for both men and women. We asked readers why they love being older and single, and the answers did not disappoint. Here are 15 reasons why going solo over the age of fifty is a great thing in life.

1. You don't have to answer to anyone but yourself.

There is absolutely no one asking you why you are doing what you are doing, who you are going with or how long you will be gone. You can come and go as you please, and you can literally do whatever your heart desires. You have the ultimate freedom and it has never felt so good.

2. People are way more considerate.

When you were younger, when potential suitors would get cold feet, sometimes they wouldn't return your phone calls or even show up for the date. Now, people have the decency and forethought to let you know if they can't show up or, better yet, if they're just not that into you.

3. You can handle rejection.

Let's face it: Rejection is always a tough thing to deal with. But as you get older, it hurts less and less, and you accept that it's just a part of life. Plus, you know that it truly happens to everyone.

4. You know how to say "no" and move on.

Before, you may have been too meek or scared to hurt someone's feelings if you just weren't into the person. So you would trudge through a relationship when you really just wanted to move on. Today, you are confident enough to gently let someone go so you can move on to a better situation.

5. People are less likely to play games or lead you on.

Finally, people have attained enough to maturity where they don't find the need to tell you complete lies. Life is so much better when you have the understanding that honesty is really the best policy.

6. You can be in charge of your own finances.

If you were married before, the financial burdens that your partner dealt with became your financial burdens as well. Today, the only person's money you are concerned with is your own. What a load off your back.

7. You can eat whatever you want for dinner.

Don't feel like cooking? Well, guess what? You don't have to. You can come home after a long day of work, lounge on the couch and order Chinese takeout. And you can even eat out it straight out of the box. No one's judging.

8. You only have to clean up after yourself.

You are the only one who uses your bathroom and it's only your own clothes in the closet. That means you always make sure to never leave toothpaste anywhere and you never leave dirty clothes all over the floor. And even if sometimes you do get a little messy, it's definitely not as annoying as picking up someone else's dirty socks.

9. You can make your own life decisions without having to consult someone else.

It feels so freeing to know that you can make strong, confident and intelligent choices on major moments in life without feeling like you have to rely on someone else's opinion.

10. You can finally vacation to that place you've always wanted to go to.

You've always wanted to go to China, but your partner never saw the point. So you went to the same beach and stayed at the same rental condo every single year. Now, there's no one stopping you from heading to Asia. And since it's so much cheaper having to pay for one person to travel, you can fit in two vacations this year.

11. You're comfortable with your body and sexuality.

You've been living on this planet long enough to appreciate that people have different bodies, and that all kinds of different body shapes can be beautiful -- including your own! You used to get nervous and self-conscious in the bedroom, but now you truly enjoy every intimate moment you spend with someone.

12. Your experience in dating makes finding someone so much easier.

Yes, you're older, but that just means you're so much wiser than you were twenty years ago. You may have used to always fall for the "one you can't get," but now you're smart enough to know that there is absolutely no point in wasting your time on a cheap thrill like that.

13. You don't hesitate to set your friend up with someone who didn't work out with you.

You never thought day would come when you would say to a date, "I don't think we are really clicking, but I have a friend who I think would be perfect for you." But now, that day has come. And you feel great knowing that if you do this good deed, one day, a friend may do the same for you.

14. You no longer feel the need to always have it your way.

When you were younger, you wanted to always choose the perfect restaurant and make sure everything fit your preferences. Now, you're open to letting your date decide where to go and what to do. At this stage in the game, you go with the flow, and you're ready for some fun and enlightening surprises.

15. You get to have that "falling in love" feeling all over again.

You are the luckiest person in the world. Do you know why? Most people only get that wonderful happy-go-lucky feeling of completely falling in love at a very young age. Then they marry someone and live blissfully for the rest of their lives. Not you. You feel like you've won the jackpot of life because being single right now lets you experience that magical feeling as many times as you like. Your relationship status opens up a whole new world of opportunity that some people just aren't lucky enough to to experience.
