Mormon Church Building Deconstructed And Entirely Donated To Habitat For Humanity

Destruction Of One Mormon Church Means A Better Life For Many

A former Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints meetinghouse has yielded the largest material donation that Habitat for Humanity has ever received in Utah, reports the Salt Lake Tribune. The site on which it once stood will be home to an American Cancer Society Hope Lodge where visiting cancer patients and their families can stay free of charge.

The Mormon church donated the land and the building to the American Cancer Society in 2011, and the Cancer Society has found a way to positively impact even more individuals by donating harvested building materials to Habitat for Humanity. Last summer, volunteers carefully rescued doors, hardware, lighting fixtures, and lumber from the site, for use in future Habitat projects or for resale. The Tribune described the church as a "giving tree" which is enabling new hope through its own destruction.

It will be the first Hope Lodge in the Intermountain West, reports 4 Utah.

The Hope Lodge is scheduled to open in 2015. Learn more about its impact here:
