When asked about being on welfare, Whoopi Goldberg had some insightful life lessons to share with us.
Though Whoopi did not grow up as a child on welfare, she was on welfare at one point in her young adult life when she gave birth to her child and moved to California.
“When you grow up in New York City, you don't know who's who when you're walking down the street,” Whoopi told us. She feels incredibly lucky to have grown up in New York City, where she felt everyone was an equal. She was also exposed to many different cultural influences, traditions and cuisines, which shaped her personality and ability to pick up different dialects.
“When you grow up in a city like this, you learn that people have different friends, different colors and different vibes,” she said.
“I grew up in the projects, where I learned to speak a smattering of different languages. All those things shaped me,” Whoopi told us.
