Police searching for a missing woman in south Florida witnessed one of her relatives fatally shoot himself when they came to his home to look for her on Thursday, the Palm Beach Post reports.
After Port St. Lucie officers saw Christopher Rossi, 53, commit suicide, they said that they discovered he had fatally beaten his 80-year-old father Peter Rossi and 79-year-old Adele Piazza, the missing woman, according to WPEC-TV. Piazza was the widow of Peter Rossi's cousin.
The older family members were apparently killed earlier last week, police said.
The Rossis home in a gated community had been the site of ongoing domestic strife. Police checked in there because Piazza's son reported that he hadn't spoken to her for several days.
Piazza was found inside a sealed garbage can filled with lye, which police believe Christopher Rossi was using to accelerate her body's decomposition WPTV reports. Peter Rossi's remains were discovered in a rolled-up carpet in the garage and police believe that his son planned to put his corpse in a double-lined trash pail with lye too.
It appeared that they died from blunt force trauma to the head, according to station WFLX.
Loaded guns were found throughout the house and before Christopher Rossi killed himself he covered himself with a blanket and told officers to "cover your ears," WPBF says.
The Rossi family has a history of low-level domestic disputes.
Christopher Rossi in 2012 allegedly left home with $1,000 check he wrote to himself from his father's account. His father called police because he worried his son would hurt himself.
He'd also allegedly vandalized Piazza's car because he didn't like her weekend visits, police said.
