So A Baseball Team Is Planning To Wear Jerseys Made Of ... Selfies

Posted: Updated:

Home runs are so last century. This baseball team wants to draw in fans with selfies.

The Kalamazoo Growlers, a summer collegiate baseball team in Kalamazoo, Mich., announced plans last week to design a game jersey using their fans' selfies. For the uninitiated, a "selfie" is loosely defined as a picture someone takes of himself, often with a cell phone or digital camera.

Here's a mock-up of the jersey:

Fans' selfies will be collected through April 1, at which point "the Growlers will build a unique mosaic-style jersey assembled entirely from the selfies entered in the promotion," a release notes. As an added incentive, "The fan that exhibits the most 'Growlers spirit' will receive a featured and prominent location on all jerseys."

The jerseys will only see the field during one game, and then will be auctioned off to the highest bidders.

While the contest has piqued the interest of quite a few fans who have submitted selfies via the team's various social media channels, others aren't quite sold.

"I thought that was an Onion article until I saw their Facebook page," one person jokes on Twitter. A more serious Facebook comment says only, "When SELFIES become a part of baseball there is a problem.."

Guess it's time to change Babe Ruth's nickname from "the Caliph of Clout" to the "Caliph of Klout."
