NRA Takes On The Tea Party In Competitive GOP Primary

The National Rifle Association will endorse Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho) Monday, wading into a competitive Republican primary in which Simpson faces a threat from a tea party-backed challenger.

Politico reports that Simpson, an ally of House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), will receive the endorsement as he attempts to beat back the ascendant candidacy of attorney Bryan Smith.

The NRA's endorsement will be made by President David Keene on behalf of the NRA Political Victory Fund, according to Politico.

Simpson, an eight-term congressman, frequently touts his A+ rating from the NRA to defend his conservative credentials against attacks from Smith. He introduced a bill in February, with the backing of the NRA, that would clarify import standards for firearms.

The congressman also has the endorsement of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which stands in contrast to Smith's endorsements from conservative groups like the Club for Growth, Madison Project and Freedom Works.

Idaho's primary is set for May 20.
