By Kellee Khalil for Lover.ly

Around here, we love a big, blowout proposal (we're looking at you, Nick Cannon), but we're always delighted when celebrities pop the question in more creative and unexpected ways. We've rounded up five of the most aww-worthy celeb proposal stories. Enjoy our favorites below, and get some engagement ring inspiration while you're at it!

1. Dwyane Wade to Gabrielle Union

Dwyane Wade's proposal to Gabrielle Union was nothing if not a tearjerker. The couple was enjoying a low-key afternoon together with Wade's three children, eating brunch and touring their under-construction home in Miami earlier this year, when Wade's boys surprised Union by holding up signs that read, "Will you marry us?" Then, Union turned to see Wade down on one knee holding out a massive sparkler. A teary-eyed Union, of course, said "yes."

The ring: Union's cushion-cut beauty is 8.5 carats and worth nearly a million dollars. You can get a similar look (without the price tag) by choosing the same classic cut and plain band.

2. Pink to Carey Hart

Singer Pink proposed to her now-husband, motocross champ Carey Hart, in 2005. While Hart competed in a Mammoth, Calif. race, Pink held up a pit sign that read, "Will you marry me?" but Hart continued around the track without stopping. On his next lap, however, Pink's sign read, "I'm serious!" Hart then pulled over and scooped us his beloved before saying a heartfelt "yes."

The ring: Carey Hart gave Pink a beautiful 5-carat diamond after getting engaged in California. For a similar style, look for a round-cut ring with a diamond-encrusted band.

3. David Burtka to Neil Patrick Harris

David Burtka's 2007 proposal to Neil Patrick Harris was simple and sweet: On their way home from a casino, Burtka asked the couple's driver to pull over. He hopped out and got down on one knee, proposing to Harris on the street corner where the couple first met.

The ring: Both Burtka and Harris wear plain bands on their right hands -- a great idea for men who want to wear engagement rings, or anyone who prefers a simpler look. For a similar style, choose a white-gold or platinum band.

4. Brady Smith to Tiffani Thiessen

When Brady Smith asked former "Saved by the Bell" star Tiffani Thiessen to be his wife, he made sure to make it memorable. The actor and artist crafted a handmade book about the couple's relationship and presented it to her along with a proposal. Can you say "awww!" The pair married in 2005.

The ring(s): Thiessen wears a set of three gorgeous diamond stacking bands -- so on-trend! Many jewelers offer similar looks, so find one in your price range if this style is for you.

5. Linda Perry to Sara Gilbert

Musician Linda Perry really went all out when she proposed to "The Talk" host Sara Gilbert! The couple was enjoying a picnic in a Los Angeles park last year when a nearby guitarist began playing one of Gilbert's favorite songs. Suddenly, other picknickers pulled out instruments and Perry sang The Cure's "Love Song" while changing into a series of t-shirts, each with one word in the sentence, "Will you marry me?" On top of all that, Perry had secretly invited several of the couple's close friends and both of their mothers to be there after the proposal!

The ring: Sara Gilbert's beautiful diamond is nestled in a stylish yellow-gold band. Choose a ring in this on-trend color for a similar look.

Before You Go

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka were engaged long before same–sex marriage was legalized, they were just waiting for the rest of the world to come around. Burtka proposed to Harris first, making sure to do it on the exact street corner where they first met. "We were on our way to an event at an Indian casino 45 minutes out of town in a limousine, and David wanted to stop for some reason that I didn’t quite get. I thought he wanted to get some booze or something. And then he got on one knee and proposed, and I was so freaked out by it that I said, 'Yes,' but I didn’t know what it meant. Then I got the ring and loved it, and a year later, on Valentine’s Day, I proposed to him in Santa Monica," Neil Patrick Harris told Out magazine.
P!nk and Carey Hart

P!nk took things into her own hands when she proposed to motocross champion Carey Hart. The singer showed up at the 2005 Pro 250 class finals in Mammoth, Calif., with bigger plans than just cheering on her competitor boyfriend. While Hart was heading into his third lap around the track, P!nk stood to the side holding a pit board, saying, "Will you marry me?" On his next lap around, the singer predicted Hart's confusion and held up a second sign, which read, "I'm serious!" According to spectators, Hart stopped his bike as quickly as he could and picked up his new fiancee.
Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves

When Matthew McConaughey proposed to the mother of his children, Camila Alves, he made sure to incorporate it into an existing family tradition. He explained the whole adorable sequence of events on Jay Leno's "The Tonight Show."
"During Christmastime we go around as a family and everyone gets their turn to open presents. I had wrapped the engagement ring in about eight different boxes deep so she'd have to keep opening boxes to get to it. And because we go around and swap out and take turns on who's opening presents, she had to get skipped the last 15 times. She kept going, 'Why can't I open that present?' And I said, 'You have to wait til the end.' Finally I get to her and I'm calling my family over ... and her eyes go wide and I take a knee and I said, 'Will you marry me and take my name?'"
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes

To make their whirlwind romance official (Remember Tom jumping up and down on Oprah's couch?), Tom Cruise took Katie Holmes to one of the most romantic destinations in the world, the Eiffel Tower. The couple dined at Le Jules Verne restaurant which looks out over Paris from over 400 feet up the Eiffel Tower. Cruise, who claimed to have never visited the Eiffel Tower, proposed to Holmes after their romantic candlelit dinner. However, the couple divorced in 2012.

Nickelback's Chad Kroeger tapped into Avril Lavigne's personal interests when he asked her to marry him. Lavigne told Ryan Seacrest all about Kroeger's surprise proposal:
"The only thing that was weird was we usually go to the studio together and he had gone before me. And I have been making this scrapbook of my time in the studio with a Polaroid camera and the only thing that was weird was I walked into the studio and he was putting a picture in to the book and I was like ‘What is he doing?’…And all of a sudden I walk over and he had taken a photo of himself holding the ring box and put the Polaroid in my scrapbook and because I had stickers everywhere he put in ‘Will you marry me?’ It was really romantic."
Talk about making memories …
Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott
AP
Though their marriage is currently on the rocks, Dean McDermott's proposal to Tori Spelling was something straight out of a fairytale. The Canadian actor took Spelling on a ride in a horse–drawn carriage through a half a mile of lit trees on a Toronto Christmas tree farm. At the end of the path, McDermott proposed to Spelling with a sapphire and diamond ring. The couple wed the following May, but McDermott wasn't finished with his grand romantic gestures. The next Christmas, he proposed again. "We sat on a bench overlooking the lake and I gave Tori her last Christmas present. I'd wrapped the ring in a much bigger box, and as soon as she opened the ring box I asked her to marry me again. It was very romantic and magical," he told People.
