Longtime television host Jerry Springer sat down with "TMZ Live" today to discuss the backlash surrounding his use of the word "tranny" on his program "The Jerry Springer Show."
Following a recent segment on his show titled "Trannies Twerk It Out," Springer reportedly caught heat from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. When TMZ questioned Springer about his use of the transphobic slur, he told reporters that he will no longer use the term.
"I've just been educated, I won't use that term," Springer told TMZ in the above video. "I mean, I honestly had no idea that you're not supposed to use that term so now we'll find another term to use. But, yeah, I didn't know it was offensive to them and I'm not interested in offending people so obviously I'll just change the term. There's no argument there."
Springer certainly isn't the first celebrity to land himself in hot water over use of the word "tranny." Last month actress Gabourey Sidibe repeatedly used the term, considered by many transgender people and their allies to be a slur, on the "Arsenio Hall Show." Sidibe later apologized for her use of the word via Twitter, telling her followers, "I don't realize that it was a slur. I'm very sorry for my poor choice of words."
