Emmy-winning "Scandal" star Dan Bucatinsky says that getting the chance to play an openly gay character is a "particularly sweet" experience.
"I wouldn't have dreamt that I, one day, would've won an Emmy for being on a show like that," Bucatinsky, who is openly gay and married to screenwriter Don Roos, told HuffPost Live this week. "To be an out gay man, married with two kids, a writer...all those things that were truths in my real life that I was also playing on television, felt particularly sweet."
As Bucatinsky pointed out, art has imitated life on more than one occasion since he landed the recurring role of James Novak (who, from the looks of it, won't be coming back) on the smash ABC series.
"As part of my Emmy speech...I wound up so overwhelmed with gratitude that I wound up thanking not just my real-life husband, but also my on-screen husband," he recalled. "I couldn't believe that I was living at a time when an actor could say such a thing ... I feel very grateful that it has sort of happened the way that it did."
The 48-year-old actor is also the author of Does This Baby Make Me Look Straight?: Confessions of a Gay Dad. He and Roos are parents to two children, Eliza and Jonah.
