Joan Rivers claims to be a fan of Lena Dunham, but she had no qualms about attacking her weight during a recent interview with Howard Stern.
"How could she wear a dress above the knee?" Rivers asked Stern of Dunham during his Sirius XM show Tuesday, March 26.
"I think the thing we love about her is that she doesn't give a s--t," Stern -- who once apologized for calling Dunham "a little fat chick" -- responded.
"But that's wrong," Rivers said. "You are sending a message out to people saying, 'It's okay. Stay fat. Get diabetes. Everybody die, lose your fingers.'"
After he defended Dunham, Rivers referenced Stern's model wife, Beth Ostrosky. "You didn't pick Lena Dunham to marry," she added.
Ultimately, the "Fashion Police" host said she disagrees with the way Dunham dresses: "I'm saying if you look the way you look, Lena -- and that's fine and you're funny -- but don't say it's okay that other girls can look like this. Try to look better. Try to look better!"
"I'm sort of like: we're one weight one day, we're one weight another day, and some day our body just doesn't even exist at all!" she told the Gothamist. "It's just a vessel I've been given to move through this life. I think about my body as a tool to do the stuff I need to do, but not the be all and end all of my existence. Which sounds like I spent a week at a meditation retreat, but it's genuinely how I feel."
