Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones thinks fans who run on the field during games should face a harsher punishment. In fact, the three-time All-Star wants to inflict some of that punishment himself.
A pair of fans ran onto the field at Yankee Stadium during the Orioles' 14-5 win on Tuesday and were eventually escorted off by security. After the game, Jones didn't mince words when talking about the incident with reporters.
"I think it's idiotic for people to run on the field. I think the punishment needs to be a lot harsher and they should let us have a shot to kick them with our metal spikes on. Because it's stupid. It's stupid. You look like a jackass when you run on the field," Jones said. "I get it, you're drunk. You want to be on SportsCenter. You're ass is going to jail with a fine, you might not be allowed to come back to the ballpark. That's a heads up. I remember a couple years ago one dude broke his ankle in Baltimore. I was laughing at him. I wish he shattered his femur because it's stupid. It's point blank stupid and anybody who does it, I wish the cops tase the living s*** out of them. I wish that."
Jones' teammate, O's infielder Ryan Flaherty, didn't seem to take it as seriously. One of the fans on Tuesday actually tried to hide behind Flaherty to avoid the cops, reported Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com.
"I wasn't sure whether to get out of the way of the guy or tackle him," Flaherty said, via MLB.com. "He was there, but it was kind of funny. The security guys were just saying, 'Leave him alone, leave him alone, leave him alone,' so I just stayed there and watched."
UPDATE: Jones told reporters on Wednesday that he doesn't regret his comments.
"People say sorry, they don't mean it. I'm not going to say it if I don't mean it. Obviously, I don't want to inflict any pain on people, but if you put us in harm's way, got to protect myself," Jones said, via Roch Kubatko of masnsports.com. "That's all it's about. Players don't pay to come watch the fans, fans pay to come watch the players. Cuss us out, badger us, but don't put our lives, our safety in jeopardy."
