Rob Lowe was just 15 years old when he became a teen heartthrob, and appeared in iconic '80s films like "The Outsiders" and "St. Elmo's Fire." Now, 35 years into his Hollywood career, he sits down with Oprah to reflect on the hard truths that come along with young fame.
Lowe writes about the pressures of being a teen star in his new book, "Love Life," and told Oprah why his experience has given him "tremendous empathy" for young singers like Justin Bieber.
"He makes really good music," Lowe says about Bieber in the above video from "Oprah Prime." He goes on, "He does. But I think he knows the dark secret. And the dark secret is, 80 percent of his audience doesn't give a s**** about the music. He knows it. It bums him out."
Lowe says the fandom has nothing to do with the art. "He is the guy who's standing in front of them at a moment that they're going through a developmental thing," Lowe says. "And it's natural. It's all great. But if it wasn't him, it would be somebody else -- like it was me."
