Airbnb is having a hard time in New York City.
Less than a month after a Manhattan tenant found out that the room he advertised on the apartment-sharing website was being used as an orgy den, the New York Post is reporting that prostitutes are turning Airbnb apartments into pop-up brothels.
"It’s more discreet and much cheaper than The Waldorf," an anonymous, 21-year-old sex worker told the tabloid. "Hotels have doormen and cameras. They ask questions. Apartments are usually buzz-in."
The revelation is, not surprisingly, getting Airbnb users hot and bothered. The New York Post reports:
One apartment that got turned into an hourly love nest belongs to publicist Jessica Penzari, 29, who rented it out through Airbnb March 21 through 23.
“She told me that she was in the Army and needed a place to hang out before she got shipped out,” Penzari said of her Airbnb “guest.”
“She said she was being deployed that week. She was asking for places to go out with her friends.”
But when a hooker got slashed by a client in the West 43rd Street apartment over the price of his “massage,” Penzari got a call from cops.
When she returned, Penzari was shocked to find telltale remnants including baby wipes and “at least 10 condoms.”
Airbnb quickly put up Penzari in a swanky hotel while workers cleaned her apartment and replaced anything that might have been soiled.
But it's yet another bad mark on the website's report card. Horror stories have cropped up over the years, including one out of Oakland in 2011 when a man came home to find his apartment ransacked and "meth pipes everywhere." Late last year, a woman rented out her apartment to two men who reportedly used it for "male-on-male massage." The New York post reports that the site is under investigation by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman for potential violations of city law barring apartment sublets for less than a month.
Airbnb, which touts itself as the "Worldwide Accommodations Leader," has hosts in more than 35,000 cities and 192 countries.
