An Indiana woman is facing several felonies after she allegedly abducted her 5-year-old daughter and led police on an intense chase before finally attempting to flee with her child in her arms.
Aubrey Coy, 34, of Syracuse, Ind. was visiting her daughter in nearby Warsaw Sunday under the court-ordered supervision of her mother, according to WSBT-TV.
But when her mother went to the bathroom, Coy escaped with her daughter, according to ABC57. The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department in Indiana located her in St. Joseph County, Mich., about 60 miles away, using the GPS signal from her phone to find her. They called local authorities, and Michigan State Police were able to find her, they said in a statement. As cops were talking to Coy at her car, however, she sped away. According to ABC57, Coy allegedly told an officer, "You aren't taking my child." She pulled her daughter from the front seat and put her in her lap as she drove, according to police.
Coy reportedly led authorities on a chase for several miles, giving police her middle finger out the window and reaching speeds of 75 miles per hour, WWMT reports. Officials from the small town of Constantine put down stop sticks; she hit them, but kept driving, police said. Eventually, one of her tires came off the rim and she got two flats.
When Coy finally stopped, she left the car with her daughter in her arms and tried to flee before she was subdued by pursuing police. Officials said she struggled and fought with officers as they tried to handcuff her.
According to WSBT-TV, Coy cried during her arraignment Monday and said she felt like she's "dreaming or something" and had "no idea how [she] got here."
In Michigan, Coy was charged with several felonies, according to state police, including for fleeing and eluding, possession of narcotics, resisting and obstruction. She was also charged with the misdemeanors of operating under the influence and child endangerment. According to WWMT, Coy was under the influence of cocaine and had several past convictions, including convictions for drug possession. She is being held on a $150,000 bond and has additional charges are pending in Indiana.
Her daughter was uninjured, according to Michigan State Police.
