When "Red" was a student at Portland State University, she worked as an exotic dancer. Red told a few people, and wrote about it in one class. In another course though, she saw disclosing her job backfire.
"I later told a history professor," Red said during a HuffPost Live segment, "I was asking for a recommendation and he asked me what I did, I thought he was a great guy I thought we had a really good rapport, and I told him, and after that my grades immediately went down."
Red, a name she asked to go by to conceal her identity, says this shows what kind of uphill battle student sex workers face today.
"I just was too embarrassed to argue about it," she said. "I never told anybody again."
She said she was angry, but didn't know where she could turn for help.
"If this is how he reacted," she said, "who can I go to?"
