We love Jimmy Fallon oh-so much, but this week he learned that one thing his audience doesn't enjoy are gender-based jokes made at Hillary Clinton's expense.
During his "Tonight Show" monologue on Monday, Fallon brought up Chelsea Clinton's recently-announced pregnancy. He then quipped: "If it's a girl, it'll get some of Chelsea's old hand-me-downs, and if it's a boy, it'll get some of Hillary's."
To his surprise, the audience seemed less than amused -- and most of the crowd booed the joke.
"It's a little pantsuit! It's a little cream pantsuit," Fallon said, trying to clarify that the joke was all about Clinton's pantsuit collection. He meant well, but it's also important to remember that low blows about Clinton's supposedly masculine wardrobe aren't all that funny.
This is especially true considering we exist in a society where, as a female politician, Clinton has been shamed for not wearing makeup, had people question whether she can be President and a grandmother and was depicted on the cover of TIME as a man-crushing lady heel. Plus, as Cosmopolitan's Eliza Thompson pointed out: "It's 2014 and jokes about the way powerful women dress are so 1985."
So, next time you joke about Hillz -- and we suspect there will be plenty of news surrounding her over the coming months -- at least be a little more creative, Jimmy. We know you have it in you.
