Avril Lavigne's "Hello Kitty" video has faced criticism. | Avril Lavigne

After Avril Lavigne's new video for "Hello Kitty" premiered on Tuesday, the Internet lit up with protests pegged to her appropriation of Japanese culture. She's been accused of "fetishizing" and making a "caricature" of the expressionless Asian women who dance behind her, following her commands.

In response to critics, Lavigne took to Twitter on Wednesday night with a pithy retaliation in the vein of "I'm not racist, I have Asian friends!"

"Hello Kitty" is the fourth single from Lavigne's self-titled 2013 album. Many thought YouTube also found the video offensive, as it was removed from the site within hours of its premiere. But a rep for the singer told MTV News that it was posted prematurely and removed until the video was set to go live the following day.
