RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory says he's backing Thom Tillis in the Republican primary for Senate in North Carolina.

The Republican governor said Tuesday that the state House speaker has the best chance to win in November's midterm elections against Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan. Eight Republican candidates are running in the May 6 primary. The winner needs 40 percent of the vote to avoid a costly runoff.

McCrory's announcement came as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce launched ads calling Tillis a conservative who will "fight Washington." The ad does not mention Tillis' two chief GOP rivals, tea party favorite Greg Brannon and minister Mark Harris.
