It’s a beautiful thing when two science fiction worlds collide: Former “Doctor Who” star Matt Smith has been cast in the upcoming reboot of the “Terminator” franchise.

On Friday, Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions announced that Smith will play a new character “with a strong connection to John Connor.”

The upcoming film, slated for a July 1, 2015 worldwide distribution, will be the first in a trilogy. Deadline originally reported that Smith’s yet unnamed role would be expanded thoroughly in the second and third films.

Directed by Alan Taylor, the "Terminator" movie will also star Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke, Jai Courtney, J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi, Byung Hun Lee and, the man himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Since ending his time playing The Doctor on the British series, Smith has starred in the musical stage adaptation of “American Psycho” in London. The actor will next be seen in the upcoming film “Lost River” directed by Ryan Gosling.
