A group backed by Republican strategist Karl Rove is investing more heavily in this year's midterm elections with a nearly $3.6 million ad blitz targeting Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) over her support for the Affordable Care Act, just two weeks after her Republican opponent was anointed.
Crossroads GPS, the nonprofit arm of Rove's super PAC, American Crossroads, debuted a 30-second television spot Tuesday that quotes both President Barack Obama and Hagan saying people could keep their health care plans if they liked them.
The group's ad will run on North Carolina stations for four weeks.
American Crossroads spent $1.6 million in support of Hagan's Republican opponent, North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis, leading up to the GOP primary earlier this month.
Democrats responded to the group's ad buy by arguing that Tillis would act as a rubber stamp for Rove were he to be elected.
“Karl Rove is trying to buy a Senate seat for Thom Tillis because as Speaker, Tillis proved he would put the special interests’ priorities ahead of what’s right for middle class families,” Hagan campaign spokesman Chris Hayden said in a statement Tuesday. “Thom Tillis is out of touch with North Carolina values. His only health care plan is full repeal, and he supports the Ryan budget that would turn Medicare into a voucher program and another plan that would force deep cuts to Social Security. Kay will always put North Carolina first, but Speaker Tillis would rather push Karl Rove’s agenda and play politics with the health of North Carolina families.”
The ad hitting Hagan is part of a $10 million campaign to flip control of the Senate. Politico reported Monday that Crossroads GPS' first heavy foray into the midterm elections also included putting down $2.3 million in Colorado, $900,000 in Alaska and $875,000 in Arkansas to attack Democratic Sens. Mark Udall, Mark Begich and Mark Pryor, respectively.
