Woman Shot Mother Dog, Abandoned Puppies, Police Say

A Texas woman is accused of shooting a mother dog in the head and abandoning her 10 newborn puppies, police say.

Tammy Green Douglas, 44, was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with animal cruelty. She told police that she became "agitated" with the dog, named Aowa, and shot her with a 9mm handgun.

The Dallas Morning-News described the gruesome scene:

Aowa, a 4-year-old heeler-shepherd mix, was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head after a school bus driver spotted a dog crate Wednesday morning by a road in Springtown. The puppies were covered in blood and still nursing from Aowa’s body.

Authorities connected Douglas to the investigation after they released a photograph of the abused dog and her pups to the public. Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler expressed his shock and dismay.

“To a normal, caring human, this is an incomprehensible act,” Fowler said in a written statement. “I can’t imagine what the suspect thought these puppies did in order to warrant her actions. Animal cruelty can never be justified.”

The puppies were placed in the care of Angels & Outlaws Second Chance Bully Ranch, an animal rescue group in Hico. One puppy died Sunday and the other nine are in good condition, according to CBS DFW.
