California's Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom took the top spot in Tuesday's nonpartisan primary, according to the Associated Press.

Newsom, a former mayor of San Francisco, briefly ran for governor in 2009 before quitting the race.

He was the highest-profile elected official to endorse Democratic attorney Ro Khanna, who is expected to face-off against Rep. Mike Honda (D-Calif.) in November in the state's 17th District.
