Last Dog Standing At Adoption Event Finds A Home

This orphaned pup finally found a home.

Madeline, an adorable pit bull whose former owner fell ill, was the last dog standing at an adoption event held over the weekend in Arizona. During the free adoption, sponsored by rescue foundation Maddie's Fund, nearly 2,000 cats and dogs were welcomed into new homes -- with the exception of the 4-year-old pit bull.

"All of our dogs got adopted except one," Bretta Nelson of the Arizona Humane Society told KTVK 3TV Phoenix. "She's just been a complete angel; now a staff favorite. We just want to see her end up in a good home before she ends up in one of our homes."

At the end of the two-day event, Madeline was taken back to one of the Arizona Humane Society's shelters. But she didn't stay there for long.

After 3TV revealed the orphaned pup's plight during a news segment, a couple drove to the shelter Tuesday with the intention of taking Madeline home. Eli and Kim Beckman were apparently heartbroken that the 4-year-old pit bull was the last dog waiting to be adopted, and they felt the urge to help the pooch.

During the two-day event, held from May 31 to June 1, 1,346 dogs and 647 cats were adopted at animal shelters in the state, KNXV-TV reports. The free adoption weekend -- Maddie's Pet Adoption Days -- is held each year around the country in order to save the lives of shelter pets and make sure they find loving homes.
