To build a natural foods empire worth nearly $14 billion, Whole Foods Market co-founder John Mackey wasn't just focusing on dollar signs. Mackey says he was concentrating on a "higher purpose."
In the above video from his upcoming conversation with Oprah on "Super Soul Sunday," he explains his "conscious capitalism" philosophy.
"Business is in this pretty narrow box and it's all about just making money," Mackey says in the above video. "But to engage in conscious capitalism is to understand the purpose of business beyond just making money, the higher purpose of your business, and to engage in business in this more conscious way. It's to provide leadership that's done more consciously to help people be fulfilled in the workplace."
"Oprah, business can be this incredible force for good," he says. "It already is largely. But because it's done unconsciously, it doesn't reach its highest potential."
Mackey says a customer knows when a company is authentic. "When we feel that somebody genuinely cares about us, we trust them," he says. "And if we trust them, we want to trade with them."
