French Twitter Is Not Pleased With President Obama

President Barack Obama and other world leaders participated in a televised ceremony Friday to honor the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. While Queen Elizabeth II was being introduced, the camera cut to Obama -- who was caught chewing gum.

At least a few French Twitter users were not amused. Their tweets were first noticed by the Daily Dot. Here are some of the not-so-positive messages for the leader of the free world, with translations afterward:

Obama avec son chewing-gum pendant la cérémonie... La "coolitude" à ses limites. #DDay70

— Bolivar Trask (@TristAntidote) June 6, 2014

"Obama with his chewing gum during the ceremony... Cool attitude has its limits."

"I just watched the June 6 commemorations on TV. One thing: OBAMA with chewing gum almost uninterrupted. How disrespectful"

Et #Obama accueille la Reine avec un chewing gum ds la bouche... #shocking #beauf'

— Lilas Yong (@LilasYong) June 6, 2014

"And #Obama welcomed the Queen with chewing gum in his mouth... #shocking #boor"

"Obama with his chewing gum... Not at all classy #DDay70"

"The gum, Obama, damn"

The president has been known to chew nicotine gum as part of his efforts to quit smoking. But even if he was trying to kick the habit Friday morning, that might not mollify his French critics. From 2005 to 2011, smoking rates rose in France.
