High School Teacher Reportedly Made Black Teen Call Him 'Master'

Mother Nochelle White said the Des Moines Public School District had confirmed that the incident occurred; but she said the district will not disclose how the educator was penalized, according to the Des Moines Register.

Roosevelt High School Principal Joseph Blazevich reportedly wrote to the mother to tell her what happened was "terrible" and "shameful." The offending teacher also called her to apologize, per the Register.

"I have tried to be humble," White, who plans on reaching out to the Iowa Civil Rights Commission and the NAACP about the matter, told the Register. "But I also feel I need to express as a mother, and as a black woman, how I feel."

Black students are a minority at Roosevelt High School, while a majority of the school's students are white, according to numbers from the National Center for Education Statistics.

The school district's website says African-Americans make up 17.5 percent of the district. Overall, minorities make up 55 percent. However, a vast majority of the district's teachers are white, and only 6 percent of the district's educators are minorities.
