Militants from the jihadist group ISIS took over Iraq's second largest city of Mosul on Tuesday, seizing control of banks, government offices and army camps. On Wednesday, the fighters pressed on to Baji, home of Iraq's biggest oil refinery, and the city of Tikrit.

The extremists' gains have left the country in shock, and as the Guardian notes, they undermine Iraqi Prime Minister al-Maliki's efforts to form a new government and have crippled the confidence in the nation's army.

Take a look at this map from the Associated Press detailing the militants' wins in Iraq on Tuesday and Wednesday.
