Devastating Fire Can't Stop Greater Canaan Missionary Baptist Church From Holding Services

Posted: Updated:

“Stay strong y’all,” declared pastor Kenneth Sayle of Greater Canaan Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas, at a Sunday service just two days after a terrible fire gutted the church. “Stay strong church. All we need to know is we’re not alone.”

The service took place right outside the charred and burned church structure, a place where they have been worshiping for over 50 years.

Speaking from the pastor's pulpit which survived the devastating blaze, Sayle reminded his congregation of the power of unity and community. His congregation's good spirits show that the message is being taken to heart.

No one was hurt in the fire, which was extinguished around 5:45 am on Friday. Though the cause has yet to be confirmed, Sayles told press that firefighters thought it was probably electrical.

Sayles was due to marry Sally Lewis, a member of the Greater Canaan congregation in the church next month. "(Was) going to walk down that aisle, but I guess we'll be walking down another aisle," Lewis said to NBCDFW.

"I know that it's not the end, it's just the beginning of a new start," Pastor Sayles said to NBCDFW. "Knowing that God is in everything."
