Transgender actress and activist Laverne Cox took part in an incredible new docuseries this week that interviews out lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) celebrities about their journeys to living openly, freely and authentically as queer individuals.
Launched by Lexus in collaboration with the It Gets Better Project, the "It Got Better" docuseries is a collaborative effort between actress Lisa Kudrow and actor and HuffPost Blogger Dan Bucatinsky. In this installment, Cox discusses growing up as an effeminate child in Mobile, Alabama, and the consistent policing she experienced of her actions, demeanor and identity by those in her life.
"Telling the truth to myself about myself is awesome because it's just a relief," Cox shares. "I don't have to try to be something I'm not -- I can just be. Who you are authentically is alright. The shame is what kills you. Believing you are unworthy of love and belonging -- that who you are authentically is a sin or is wrong -- is deadly. Who you are is beautiful and amazing."
