Ms. New York Senior America Jane Rubinstein Opens Up About Jump-Starting Her Life At 50

An inescapable part of life is the way it changes gradually as we age. For Jane Rubinstein, three radical changes came all at once just as she was turning 50.

"My oldest son left for college, and we were very close, so that was a big separation. ... My dad passed on, and I lost a job that was near and dear to me," she said. "At that point, three things disappeared in one moment, and I was 50 years old. So I said, 'What can I do to make my life more exciting and also to always give back?'"

Rubinstein decided to open herself up to new experiences, and 12 years later she was crowned Ms. New York Senior America 2014. She told HuffPost Live's Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani that competing in pageants has revitalized her life and encouraged her to embrace her inner beauty.
