We never imagined we'd come this close to a whale, but this video -- shot with a GoPro camera -- defies those odds in a big way. Literally.
The video captures an amazing face-to-face moment between researcher Dave Anderson and a pod of false killer whales -- cetaceans with a similar skull shape to orcas -- off the coast of Dana Point, California.
What's remarkable here is how the whales swim so amiably around Anderson's underwater camera. At points, they even seem to engage with it, whether they realize it or not.
Either way, the video is a fantastic sea-based spectacle.
Lastly, if you come across whales while you're out on a boat, make sure to give them a wide berth -- however tempting it may be to jump in and look closer.
